Buffalo Trace Distillery has taken the idea of summer camp and given it a distinctly bourbon-focused upgrade.
Camp Buffalo Trace 2026 is a new adults-only experience at the historic Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky. Instead of cabins, canoeing and traditional camp games, bourbon fans get barrel-inspired competitions, whiskey education, blind tastings, woodworking and, for a small group of guests, luxury glamping directly on the distillery grounds.
The first Camp Buffalo Trace events are being held on August 29 and September 5, 2026. Attendance was not sold through traditional tickets. Buffalo Trace selected participants through a limited online sweepstakes.
Here is everything bourbon fans should know about Camp Buffalo Trace.
What Is Camp Buffalo Trace?
Camp Buffalo Trace is a 21+ bourbon summer camp experience created by Buffalo Trace Distillery.
The concept combines the nostalgia and competition of summer camp with hands-on experiences centered around bourbon production, maturation and Buffalo Trace history.
Rather than simply taking another distillery tour, campers participate in four different activities designed to teach them about whiskey while keeping the experience interactive.
Buffalo Trace describes the event as a combination of craftsmanship, competition and discovery.
Camp Buffalo Trace 2026 Dates
There are two Camp Buffalo Trace dates scheduled for 2026:
- Saturday, August 29, 2026
- Saturday, September 5, 2026
The events take place at Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky.
The August 29 event has already taken place. The second Camp Buffalo Trace date is September 5, 2026.
How Do You Get Into Camp Buffalo Trace?
This is one of the biggest things bourbon fans need to understand about Camp Buffalo Trace.
You could not simply purchase a ticket.
Attendance for the 2026 events was available exclusively through an online sweepstakes.
The Camp Buffalo Trace sweepstakes ran from July 14, 2026 at noon ET through July 21, 2026 at 11:59 a.m. ET. No purchase was required.
The sweepstakes is now closed.
Buffalo Trace selected:
- 90 winners for the day-camp experience, with each winner receiving a guest pass
- 10 winners for the day camp plus overnight glamping experience, with each winner also receiving a guest pass
- 200 total guests across the Camp Buffalo Trace program
Entrants who selected the overnight option were still eligible for the regular day-camp experience if they were not selected for glamping.
That exclusivity makes Camp Buffalo Trace substantially different from a normal Buffalo Trace tour.
What Do You Do at Camp Buffalo Trace?
Camp Buffalo Trace includes four primary bourbon-focused activities.
Whiskey Woodcraft Workshop
Campers make a custom muddler from authentic whiskey barrel staves.
The experience also explores one of the most important components of bourbon production: American white oak.
A bourbon barrel is not simply a container. The interaction between whiskey and charred oak plays a massive role in creating the color, aroma and flavor we eventually find in the glass.
This workshop gives campers something tangible to take away while connecting the craft directly to bourbon production.
Bung Driving Relay
Then things get competitive.
The Bung Driving Relay turns a traditional cooperage task into a camp-style competition.
Campers race while performing a technique inspired by the process of securing barrels with a bung.
It might sound simple until speed becomes part of the equation.
It is exactly the kind of activity that makes Camp Buffalo Trace different from standing behind a rope while someone explains how bourbon is made.
Blind Tasting and Buffalo Trace Trivia
This is probably where experienced bourbon drinkers start getting humbled.
Campers participate in a blind tasting and Buffalo Trace trivia competition designed to test both sensory skills and knowledge of the distillery.
Without a bottle or label sitting in front of you, identifying whiskey can become much harder than people expect.
The activity combines tasting with questions surrounding Buffalo Trace history.
Single Barrel Challenge
For serious whiskey enthusiasts, the Single Barrel Challenge may be the most interesting experience at Camp Buffalo Trace.
Campers taste three barrels of the same bourbon at different ages and attempt to determine which is which.
Along the way, the experience explores how factors such as:
- Age
- Warehouse location
- Maturation
- Barrel interaction
can change the final character of a whiskey.
This is the type of bourbon education that is difficult to replicate at home.
Instead of comparing three different brands or mash bills, you are examining how maturation itself changes whiskey.
Camp Buffalo Trace Glamping
Then there is the part of Camp Buffalo Trace that generated most of the attention.
You can actually spend the night at Buffalo Trace Distillery.
A small number of selected campers receive an overnight luxury camping experience immediately following their day at camp.
This is not exactly sleeping in a basic tent with a sleeping bag.
The Camp Buffalo Trace glamping setup includes:
- Luxury canvas tents
- Air conditioning
- Premium indoor furnishings
- Outdoor furnishings
- Mini refrigerators
- Bottled water
- Freddie's Old-Fashioned Sodas
- Plush robes
- Slippers
and additional amenities.
For bourbon enthusiasts who have visited Buffalo Trace multiple times, the opportunity to stay overnight on the distillery grounds is arguably the biggest attraction of the entire event.
Is Camp Buffalo Trace Free?
Yes.
There was no purchase necessary to enter the 2026 Camp Buffalo Trace sweepstakes, and purchasing Buffalo Trace products did not improve your chances of being selected.
However, there is an important catch.
Travel is not included.
According to the official rules, Buffalo Trace does not provide travel or travel reimbursement to winners. Selected participants are responsible for getting themselves to Frankfort, Kentucky.
The sweepstakes was limited to legal residents of the 50 United States and Washington, D.C. who were at least 21 years old.
Where Is Camp Buffalo Trace?
Camp Buffalo Trace takes place at:
Buffalo Trace Distillery
113 Great Buffalo Trace
Frankfort, Kentucky 40601
Buffalo Trace operates on a historic distillery campus in Frankfort and offers complimentary tours and tastings throughout the year.
Camp Buffalo Trace, however, is a separate special experience and should not be confused with the distillery's normal tour program.
Can You Still Enter Camp Buffalo Trace 2026?
No.
The entry window for Camp Buffalo Trace 2026 closed on July 21, 2026.
As of August 30, the first event has already taken place and the second is scheduled for September 5, 2026.
If Buffalo Trace decides to bring the program back in 2027, expect the demand to be significant.
Nothing has been announced yet regarding a Camp Buffalo Trace 2027, so bourbon fans should be cautious about any unofficial dates or registration information circulating online.
Why Camp Buffalo Trace Is Different From a Normal Distillery Tour
Buffalo Trace already offers some of the most popular bourbon tours in Kentucky.
Camp Buffalo Trace goes in another direction.
Instead of primarily watching and listening, campers are actively participating.
You are working with barrel wood.
You are driving bungs.
You are tasting blind.
You are comparing barrels at different stages of maturation.
And a handful of people are sleeping at Buffalo Trace when the rest of the visitors have gone home.
That combination makes this much closer to a bourbon enthusiast experience than a traditional Kentucky distillery visit.
Is Camp Buffalo Trace Worth Watching for 2027?
Absolutely.
Camp Buffalo Trace is exactly the kind of event bourbon enthusiasts should keep on their radar.
The 2026 program was extremely limited, and the overnight portion was even harder to get into.
If Buffalo Trace announces Camp Buffalo Trace 2027, I would expect interest to move quickly.
Anyone hoping to attend a future version should watch Buffalo Trace Distillery's official announcements closely rather than waiting until the event dates approach.

Final Thoughts on Camp Buffalo Trace
Camp Buffalo Trace may be one of the most interesting bourbon experiences Buffalo Trace has introduced.
There are plenty of opportunities to tour distilleries across Kentucky.
There are far fewer opportunities to make something from an actual barrel stave, compete in bourbon-inspired challenges, taste barrels at different stages of maturation and potentially spend the night on the grounds of one of America's most famous distilleries.
That is what makes Camp Buffalo Trace 2026 worth paying attention to.
And if this becomes an annual event, getting into the next Camp Buffalo Trace could become one more thing bourbon hunters have to compete for.
